The Science

SurfaceGuard90 - Antimicrobial Coating

Long Lasting Protection for Touch Points, Surfaces and Devices

Germs, also called microbes or micro-organisms, are living cells that are too small to be seen with the naked eye. These micro-organisms, known as bacteria, fungus, and viruses are responsible for a large majority of the illnesses and disease found in humans. Our hands are responsible for as much as 80% of the transfer of these pathogens. All conventional surface sanitizers have to get inside the micro-organism in order to kill them. A chemical agent, such as alcohol or BAC, will act like a poison invading any nearby cells causing the microorganism to die. This method is effective, but only for a matter of seconds. The poison then evaporates away and leaves your surface vulnerable..

    hiworks

SurfaceGuard90® SurfaceGuard90 with Organosilane is an antimicrobial coating that inhibits the growth of bacteria, fungi, algae, and mold on surfaces for an extended period of time (30 days to 3 years). SurfaceGuard90 dries to form a uniform layer of microscopic “spikes” that are deadly to any microorganism. Germs are electrostatically attracted to Organosilane’s spiked surface. The Organosilane molecule then draws the microbe down to its core when the germ is forced to implode (lysis) and dies. SurfaceGuard90 contains no thickeners, stabilizers, colorants, dyes or additives. It is non-toxic, non-mutagenic, and non-allergenic. SurfaceGuard90 is safe for use with people, animals and plants. This product is safe for application to a wide variety of surfaces and materials including fabrics, carpet, upholstery, drapes, linens, wood, plastics, stone, porcelain and metals. Application to surfaces produces an invisible, transparent and durable antimicrobial film that will not transfer on contact with other surfaces and is non-leaching on contact with water or solvents. Once the product is dry, the bonded antimicrobial film is non-volatile, odorless and colorless.

molecule

SurfaceGuard90’s antimicrobial technology & compounds represent a new generation of antimicrobials. SurfaceGuard technology is based on the use of quaternary ammonium silicone compounds as antimicrobial agents either in solvent or in aqueous and stable solutions. By making these compounds water based systems, they become non-flammable and require no solvents for dilution nor any special handling, are uniformly dispersible on almost any surface, and simple and economical to use because of their extended shelf-life (at least a year vs. a week). Unlike similar antimicrobial products, these characteristics make these compounds and products ideal for use in a wide range of industrial and institutional, household, OEM, medical, and food applications.

When the ammonium salts are reacted with certain organosilanes they form an integrated system, and when this system is applied to any surface, it forms an invisible (one molecule deep) and durable (through ion exchange & rapid polymerization) antimicrobial protection. These compounds possess powerful antimicrobial properties which make them very effective against Gram positive (+) and Gram negative (-) odor causing bacteria, durable and long lasting for months, and valuable and useful for a variety of surfaces, substrates, instruments and applications. A23 USA’s antimicrobial technology and products have been employed to protect everyday consumer goods, or to protect almost any surface against odor causing microbial contamination.

The primary core technology contains no heavy metals, formaldehyde treatment, or phenol groups. Unlike other antimicrobial materials, Extensive studies, performed by many other companies, have shown the above chemistry does not allow or cause microbial adaptation, resistance, mutation, diffusion, or migration. It is significantly different from conventional sanitizers, disinfectants, or biocides that are extremely toxic and contaminate the environment with undesirable chemicals. Some of the differences are in its chemical nature, effectiveness, durability, and safety. This technology has a unique advantage over all previously known methods and applications: the antimicrobial component material is bonded to the cell or surface. Microorganisms are then destroyed by simple contact with the surface. A23 USA’s antimicrobial products bond to almost any surface, creating unlimited applications for the A23 USA’s breakthrough technology.

Mode of Action & Function

Silane BaseThe first section of the long chain molecule is a silane base, which enables the antimicrobial to anchor securely onto the substrate. A covalent bond is formed slowly through hydrolysis reactions, providing long-lasting and sometimes permanent, antimicrobial protection against a broad spectrum of single cell microorganisms.

Positively Charged Nitrogen The second section of the long chain molecule is a bolt of electricity that finishes off any speared bug that survives the sword. A positively charged atom of nitrogen writes the bugs epitaph. The negatively charged membranes of some microbes will be magnetically drawn to their demise. This mechanical kill negates the need for toxic chemicals.

Long Molecular Carbon Chain– The third section of the long chain molecule is the blade that initially comes into contact with the offending microbes. This acts like a sword that punctures the cell membranes of all microbes coming in contact with it.

The active ingredient forms a colorless, odorless, positively charged polymer that chemically bonds to the treated surface. You could think of it as a layer of electrically charged swords. When a microorganism comes in contact with the treated surface, the quaternary amine “sword” punctures the cell membrane and the electrical charge “shocks” the cell. Since nothing is transferred to the now dead cell, the antimicrobial doesn’t lose strength and the “sword” is ready for the next cell to contact it.
No. it does not volatilize, dissipate, or leach onto other surfaces. Its chemistry polymerizes where it is applied and forms a permanent bond that essentially lasts the life of the treated surface. Normal cleaning will not remove the treatment, although it can be eventually abraded away.
Since the cured antimicrobial is non-volatile, insoluble, and non-leaching, in theory the treatment should last for the life of the treated surface. In practice, the life of a treatment depends on a number of factors, not the least of which is the cleanliness of the surface. Abrasive or caustic cleaners (pH > 11.5) can also shorten effective life.
Yes – it can be used on all surfaces, both porous and non-porous. This is a tremendous advantage over disinfectants which by federal law are only approved for hard, non-porous surfaces.
The water based product can be applied by trigger sprayer, pump up sprayer, back pack sprayer and fogging. The manufacturer product by pad, exhaust or over spray.

Most commercial antimicrobials used are capable of providing a quick inhibition of bacteria and fungi (although some have a limited spectrum of effectiveness). Conventional products penetrate living cells and kill by way of poisoning the organism. They are designed to act quickly and dissipate quickly to avoid adverse effects to humans and animals due to their toxic ingredients. Our coating takes a totally different approach. Like conventional antimicrobials it provides an effective initial microbial kill when it is applied, BUT, unlike the others, it also provides long-term control of growth on treated surfaces by creating a modified surface to make them antimicrobial.
Because of its unique chemistry, it provides long-term protection against regrowth and future contamination on treated surfaces. Porous surfaces, which are contaminated below the surface, will occasionally experience some growth that breaks through a treated surface.

The unique properties permit near permanent bonding to any surface to which it is applied. Furthermore, this product will not give off any gases, leach onto other surfaces, or lose its strength over time. As long as the surface is kept clean with normal cleaning procedures, the surface will continue to fight any microbial growth.
It is effective against odor causing bacteria, mold and mildew.
No. The product provides continuous antimicrobial protection that protects the surfaces. However, normal cleaning practices should be maintained.
It begins to work as soon as the microorganism comes into contact with the protected surface. Under right conditions, microbes on an untreated surface can double every 20 minutes!
Extensive testing and a long use history have shown it to be safe. While it is impossible to say that no one willevery experience an allergic reaction to anything, it is highly unlikely a negative experience would be observed.

Less Stress on the Environment

SurfaceGuard90 and SurfaceGuard7200 are the environmentally friendly and user friendly antimicrobial. These products contain no heavy metals, arsenic, tin or polychlorinated phenols. A23 USA LLC addresses the two main ecological concerns associated with leaching antimicrobials: bleeding harmful toxins into the environment and the generation of adaptive organisms (superbugs) with Bio-Protect.

What happens to SurfaceGuard90 and SurfaceGuard 7200 after a treated garment is thrown away or discarded?

A shirt treated with this technology and placed in a landfill will break down to basic components in about five years: carbon dioxide, nitrous oxide, and silicon dioxide (sand or quartz) from which it was derived.

The Obvious Choice

All antimicrobials are NOT created equal. It is important to understand the basic chemical, physical, and biological properties of an antimicrobial so the best choice can be made.

Because of its unique mode of action and inability to migrate from a treated surface, our technology is the obvious choice to minimize environmental contamination and the development of resistant organisms.

  • No poison

1 Bound vs. Unbound

This is a significant area of differentiation. All antimicrobials EXCEPT SurfaceGuard90 are "unbound".

"Unbound technologies work by leaving (leaching) the applied substrate and entering the microbe in the air. The catalyst they use to leach from the substrate is usually moisture or sodium. Eventually this depleting action of the active ingredient and leaves the substrate unprotected. SurfaceGuardonly works if it remains attached to the substrate."

Germ Basic Information

The term "germ" is really just a generic word for four different types of organisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa.

Bacteria (pronounced: bak- tir -ee-uh) are tiny, single-celled organisms that are found throughout nature, including in the bodies of human beings. A certain number of bacteria are good for our bodies - they help keep the digestive system in working order and keep harmful bacteria from moving in. Some bacteria are even used to produce medicines and vaccines. But bacteria can cause trouble too - ever had a cavity, urinary tract infection, or strep throat? These infections are all caused by bacteria.

Viruses (pronounced: vye -rus-iz) are even smaller than bacteria and can't live on their own. In order to survive, grow, and reproduce, they need to be inside other living organisms. Most viruses can only live for a very short time outside other living cells. For example, they can stay on surfaces like a countertop or toilet seat in infected bodily fluids for a short period of time, but they quickly die there unless a live host comes along. However some viruses, such as the kind that cause hepatitis (an infection of the liver), can survive on surfaces for a week or longer and still be able to cause infections.

Once they've moved into your body, viruses spread easily and can make you quite sick. Viruses are responsible for not-so-serious diseases like colds as well as extremely serious diseases like smallpox.

Fungi (pronounced: fun -jye) are multi-celled, plant-like organisms that usually aren't dangerous in a healthy person. Fungi can't produce their own food from soil, water, and air; instead, they get nutrition from plants, food, and animals in damp, warm environments. Two common fungal infections include athlete's foot and yeast infections. People who have weakened immune systems (from diseases like AIDS or cancer) may develop more serious fungal infections.

Protozoa(pronounced: pro-toe- zo -uh) are one-celled organisms like bacteria. Protozoa love moisture, so intestinal infections and other diseases they cause are often spread through contaminated water.

Once organisms like bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa invade your body, they get ready to stay for a while. These germs draw all their energy from you! They may damage or destroy your own healthy cells. As they use up your nutrients and energy, most will produce waste products, known as toxins .

Some toxins cause the annoying symptoms of common colds or flu-like infections, such as sniffles, sneezing, coughing, and diarrhea. But other toxins can cause high fever, increased heart rate, and even life-threatening illness. If you're not feeling well and visit your doctor, he or she may examine your blood and other fluids under a microscope or perform cultures to determine which germs (if any) are making you sick.

How Can I Protect Myself From Germs?

The best way to prevent the infections that germs cause is by protecting yourself. Because most germs are spread through the air in sneezes or coughs or through bodily fluids like sweat, saliva, semen, vaginal fluid, or blood, your best bet is to limit contact with those substances.

Washing your hands often is absolutely the best way to stop germs from getting into your body. When should you wash? After using the bathroom, after blowing your nose or coughing, after touching any pets or animals, after gardening, or before and after visiting a sick relative or friend. And of course you should wash your hands before eating or cooking. There's a right way to wash hands, too - you need to soap up well using warm water and plenty of soap, then rub your hands vigorously together for 15 seconds (away from the water). Rinse your hands and finish by drying them thoroughly on a clean towel.

If you spend any time in the kitchen, you'll have many opportunities to get rid of germs. Be sure to use proper food-handling techniques, like using separate cutting boards, utensils, and towels for preparing uncooked meat and poultry.

Another way to fight infections from germs is to make sure you have the right immunizations, especially if you'll be traveling to countries outside the United States. Other yearly immunizations, such as the flu vaccine, may be a particularly good idea if you have a weakened immune system or other chronic medical problems.

If you are sexually active, you should use condoms to prevent infection because viruses, bacteria, fungi, and protozoa can be spread via oral, anal, or vaginal contact. Also, all teens should be vaccinated against meningococcal disease, HPV, and varicella (chickenpox), and hepatitis B. Hepatitis B is often transmitted through sexual activity but people can also get it from contaminated needles - such as those used for tattooing, body piercing, or drugs.

With a little prevention, you can keep harmful germs out of your way!

SurfaceGuard90 Benefits

  • SurfaceGuard 7200 and SurfaceGuard90 performs without disfusion or leaching off the applied substrate.

  • Bound technology- unlike conventional disinfectants, poisons, phenols or heavy metals, our technology performs while bound to the applied surface (substrate).

  • Residual Efficacy – Unlike other antimicrobials, our product's efficacy remains for a long period of time. Our products specifies reapplication every 90 days and has been independently tested for 100 standard washes.

  • Porous and Non porous Surfaces – It is against the law to apply many antimicrobials to porous materials. Our technology allows for both porous and nonporous materials.

  • Effective against a wide array of odor causing bacteria, fungi and mold.

  • No Super Bugs – There is no known or anticipated risk for microbes to mutate to a Super Bug. This is due to the bound technology of SurfaceGuard 7200 and SurfaceGuard90. Other technologies work by "uploading" into the microorganism resulting sometimes in a mutation of the original microorganism.

  • Shelf Life - 1 year shelf life or longer unopened. Once opened, use in 1 year.

  • Ease of Use - The two products can be applied in or on most substrates.

  • Safety– SurfaceGuard90 is a completely water-based formulation. It is easily used by field personnel using a basic backpack sprayer. SurfaceGuard 7200 has a long safety record with many manufacturers. Neither product uses heavy metals, arsenic, tin, phenols or poisons.

  • Green – The products breaks down to carbon dioxide, nitrous dioxide and silicon dioxide.
